IPL Points Table: The IPL started in 2008 as a new professional Twenty20 cricket league in India. It was launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to make cricket more exciting and popular, especially with younger fans. The first IPL season had 8 city-based franchise teams playing short format matches.
In that first 2008 season, the Rajasthan Royals team won the IPL trophy. Australian Shane Warne was their captain and leading player. The IPL was an immediate success, with stadiums packed and huge TV viewership across India. Top cricket stars from around the world were attracted to play in the lucrative tournament.
Over the next few years, the IPL continued growing rapidly in popularity and value. More franchise teams were added, taking it to 10 city teams by 2011. The league also faced its first controversy in 2010 related to match fixing and illegal betting.
In 2011, India hosted and won the Cricket World Cup, further boosting cricket’s popularity. By 2014, the IPL had become one of the most valuable sports leagues in the world in terms of broadcast rights and sponsorships.
However, the 2013 season was disrupted by a bigger illegal betting scandal. Some cricketers and administrators were banned temporarily. After an investigation, the Supreme Court appointed a new BCCI leadership in 2015 to reform the IPL.
The IPL continued being played every year in March-May going forward. New teams from Lucknow and Ahmedabad were added in 2022, making it a 10-team league again. Players’ salaries kept rising with media valuations.
In 2023, the IPL media rights for the next 5 years were sold for a massive $6.2 billion, making it one of the richest leagues globally. Top world cricketers now prioritize playing in the annual IPL over other tournaments.
IPL Points Table System
In the IPL, teams get points for how well they play in each game. Here’s how the points work:
- Win: 2 points
- Loss: 0 points
- No Result/Tied: 1 point each
The team that has the most points when the league games finish goes into the playoffs. The top two teams go straight to Qualifier 1. The third and fourth teams play in the Eliminator to see who else gets into the playoffs.
